DreadfulTales.com just did a round-up of Canadian genre talent, featuring such authors as Lydia Peever, John R. Little and Gord Rollo. We're particularly pleased to see several scribes we've published among such fine company; Ian Rogers, Tobin Elliott and Steve Vernon all get much deserved, individual shout-outs. Better still, lurking at the bottom of the piece is the following extremely flattering paragraph about Burning Effigy Press itself:
Monica Kuebler and Burning Effigy are a phenomenal little specialty press here in the evil tundra of northern frights. Their releases run the gamut of genre authors, housing chapbooks from Canadian authors like Steve Vernon, Ian Rogers, Tobin Elliott, and Richard Gavin, to folks more abroad. Weston Ochse, Nate Southard, Lee Thomas, Maria Alexander, and Michael Louis Calvillo have all made homes here, allowing Burning Effigy to mark out their own territory as a small press that packs a strong punch. It would be impossible for me to suggest any one title from their arsenal, so I’m just gonna tell you grab ‘em all. You won’t be disappointed. Kuebler has the eye of a true genre fan, and has never steered this voracious reader wrong.
Yup, we're definitely blushing. |

Michael will be joined at the Burning Effigy launch party by THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE author NATE SOUTHARD. Also in attendance, Burning Effigy founder/editor-in-chief Monica S. Kuebler, who will be accepting pitches for press during the con's official pitch sessions on Saturday. Now, a little more about this visceral little novella...

Humanity is on the cusp of a New Evolution. Yep! Pure Emotion has curdled and given way to empty solutions, a gilded edge of bling-bling exteriors masking Rampant Corruption, Souring Evil and Internal Pollution.
Our hero, Malcolm, the reluctant man with a reluctant plan, purpose fluttering in his chest from zero to a million miles an hour in seconds flat, holds the keys to the kingdom of light. All he has to do is eat seven lovely brains and set things right. He’s got a hacksaw, and a hammer, and a set of determined, pearly whites. Can he usher in hope before the imminent descent of everlasting night?

Just in time for next Sunday's Word on the Street festival in Toronto we unveil a brand new Felix Renn/The Black Lands novella by Ian Rogers, BLACK-EYED KIDS. It's just one of three new titles launching next weekend, when we are doing a duel launch here at home and at KillerCon in Las Vegas. You can learn more about it below.

Felix Renn is a private investigator in a world that co-exists alongside The Black Lands, a dark dimension filled with terrifying creatures.
After the woman he's hired to follow turns up dead, Felix discovers he has drawn the attention of the Black-Eyed Kids – supernatural entities so dark and mysterious that even the government's elite Paranormal Intelligence Agency knows little about them.
As the bodies continue to pile up, Felix quickly discovers he has no one to turn to, and that it's only a matter of time before the Black-Eyed Kids come calling on him.
WHAT FOLKS HAVE SAID ABOUT THE STORY:
"Since first encountering Ian Rogers’s private investigator Felix Renn – and his run-ins with the mysterious Black Lands that lie bloody cheek-to-jowl with our own reality – I have been following each of his cases with avid interest. Now, in Black-Eyed Kids, Renn has met his most dangerous challenge yet. Truly, this is one of the most chilling horror stories I’ve read in years. Make that, that I’ve read period. By the time it’s done you’ll be looking over your shoulder for sweet little children with obsidian eyes. And more than that, you’ll be looking over your shoulder in the hopes of seeing the next Renn adventure sneaking up on you.” – Jeffrey Thomas, author of Punktown
"With Black-Eyed Kids, Ian Rogers continues to raise the stake for his Felix Renn stories. ... This time out, Renn finds himself confronted by a pair of sinister children whose power to evoke sheer, unbridled fear is just this side of irresistible. His efforts to understand their connection to a series of gruesome murders without winding up a (horribly mutilated) corpse, himself, form the backbone of this fast-moving, highly entertaining read. Renn's encounters with supernatural monsters (especially a tree that's every gardener's worst nightmare) are as well-handled as ever, but it's his interactions with monsters of the human variety that give this narrative its kick.” – John Langan, author of Technicolor and Other Revelations
